2022 Ofsted report from a School who have been running the Reading Road Map for several years;

'“Older pupils enjoy reading regularly in school, including in the welcoming library space. Pupils readily discuss what they like about their favourite authors. They are also very enthusiastic about the ‘reading road map’, which sets them a goal of reading 40 books over the year. In classrooms, teachers have developed attractive spaces for reading. They suggest books with the aim of broadening pupils’ experience of authors and genres.”

The Reading Road Map is a reading for pleasure initiative aimed at broadening children's reading horizons.

There are maps for Years 1&2 (the Adventure Map), 3&4, 5&6 and Years 7&8.

All the titles on each map (other than the Classics genre) have been published within the last 12 months, and no author has more than 1 title per map.

We believe that the best way to increase literacy levels and imbed a reading culture in schools is through reading for pleasure. We’ve found that the children in schools who participate in the Road Maps read a wider range of books and discuss reading with their peers more than they would before. The Reading Road Maps give a reading structure that schools can use in many different ways. Some use it as a reading challenge between children, classes and year groups, others run it as their home reading resource. The Reading Road Maps are flexible enough to be used in different ways that suit the particular needs of a school.

The Adventure Reading Road Map

Adventure Reading Road Map

The Adventure Reading Road Map is aimed at children in Year 1&2. Like all our other Maps its focus is on raising literacy levels through reading for pleasure with 30 brand new titles and authors, hand picked by our librarians. The difference with this map is that its other aim is for parents, carers and school staff to read aloud with their children. This is one of the best ways to encourage children into the world of books as well as improving their literacy from an early age. The map also features a box on the back with tips on the best practice for helping children read.

The Year 3 & 4 Reading Road Map

The Year 3&4 Road Map features 40 titles and authors hand picked by our librarians. As with all our other Maps, it has been designed to increase literacy levels through reading for pleasure. We know how difficult it can be to move some children on from titles and authors they feel comfortable with. By having the Map with its 40 titles and 8 genres and access to the books on the map, children have the ability to explore different books and share recommendations with their peers.

The Year 5 & 6 Reading Road Map

The Year 5&6 Reading Road Map has 60 titles and authors hand picked by our librarians. Like our other Maps its main aim is to increase reading levels through reading for pleasure. By having access to the Map and all the titles on it, children have the ability to explore all the different titles and discover new authors and genres they may not have tried before. This year we have added a non-fiction road for those who feel more comfortable starting with those, but also to highlight different vocabulary used in non-narrative books.hatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

The Year 7 & 8

The Year 7&8 Reading Road Map features 35 titles and authors, hand picked by our librarians. Like our other Maps its main focus is raising literacy levels through reading for pleasure. The jump from Primary to Secondary often sees a dip in reading interest. As mentioned above we believe that reading for pleasure is the best way to increase literacy levels. the more students read, the better their literacy skills. By having access to the titles on the Map, students will be able to expand on what they would normally read, and open up to new authors and different writing styles.
